Kampa Tibetan-Yushu

Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture – welcome to the "Roof of the World." located at the source of the Three Rivers in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in southwestern Qinghai Province. It is known as "the source of rivers." Tibetans mostly inhabit in Yushu, and most of them follow Tibetan Buddhism. Their lifestyles, behaviors, and customs have reflected a harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship between man and the natural environment.

 

What to Visit in Yushu?

Feeling cooped up? Got itchy feet? To give you a breath of virtual fresh air, we've listed some must-see attractions in Yushu. So, What are you waiting for? Just stay strong, stay safe, and start our journey to Qinghai Yushu.

First, we will come to Hoh Xil, a paradise of wildlife in the northwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In this National Nature Reserve, the snow-capped mountains, grasslands, clear lakes with reflections of white clouds, and wild animals' flocks formed the breathtaking scenery.

Continue our journey; we will visit Three River Source (Sanjiangyuan) National Natural Reserve sits at an average elevation of 4,700 meters in northwest China's Qinghai Province. The Yellow, Yangtze, and Lancang rivers and the rivers leading to the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve, originate from here. 

It is the most extensive pilot program in China's National Park System and the home of precious plateau wildlife such as the Tibetan antelope, snow leopard, and Tibetan wild donkey.

Qumarleb County - the second town of the Yangtze River offers many famous tourist attractions such as Source of the Yellow River, Kunlun Mountain Jade Everest, Lebagou Rock Paintings, and Tongtian River Scenery. 

Unexpectedly, we arrived at Vairocana Temple (Temple of Princess Wencheng). The temple is small and built in a small valley some 20 km outside Yushu Town. Entering the hall, you will see the earliest large scale relief Buddha groups on the Qinghai cliff.

Finally, we will come to Jianamani Shijing Castle. No matter where you go, you will see the peculiar Mani Stones in the mountain pass, the lake, the monastery, and the burial ground in the Tibetan area. However, Jianamani Shijing Castle in Yushu has more than two billion praying stone engraved with Buddha sculptures and pictures. It can be considered as the largest Mani Stones in the Guinness Book of Records.

 

Kampa Tibetan Culture in Yushu:

1. Kampa Tibetan Singing and Dancing: Kampa Tibetans are good at singing and dancing, and they can express their moods and emotions by singing and dancing.

2. Kampa Tibetan Clothing is quite gorgeous, making Yushu Tibetan District a "hometown of costumes." The women's clothing is more luxurious and beautiful, with high-quality otter leather-trimmed with agate, emerald, red coral headwear accessories, which looks extraordinarily noble and elegant.

 

History of Yushu:

Yushu was inhabited by the Qiang, an ancient tribe in northwest China. The region has successively governed by the Western Qiang, and Tubo, etc. Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture was established in 1955, which governed six counties including Yushu, Nangqian, Chengduo, Zaduo, Qumarai, and Zhiduo.

 

Climate and Weather of Yushu:

Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture has a typical alpine climate with an average altitude of more than 4200 meters, the annual average temperature of this region is below zero. From June to October is the best time to travel to Yushu because summer temperature is relatively cool and humid. Moreover, From 25th July to 1st August, the annual Yushu Horse Racing Festival will be held on the Tashi Grassland. It is the largest Tibetan carnival in Qinghai.

How to Get to Yushu?

There are two ways to get to Yushu: flights, and drive

1. Go to Yushu By Air:

Yushu Bangtang Airport is 18 kilometers north of Yushu city center. It is a high plateau airport (3950 Meter). Currently, it has direct flights to Chengdu, Xi'an, and Xining.

2. Drive to Yushu:

Yushu has a comprehensive road transportation network. With the 214 National Road as the main skeleton, it can directly go to Xining or Sichuan. The south and west can go directly to Ganzi on the State-Tibet Highway 213. The north is connected with National Highway 109.
