Qumarleb County

Qumarleb County - the second town of the Yangtze River, located in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province; the county is known as the "first county at the source of three rivers." Qumarleb County is not only one of the source of the Yangtze River, but also the birthplace of the Yellow River.

What to Visit in Qumarleb County?

Qumarleb county offers many famous tourist attractions such as the Yellow River Source, Kunlun Mountain Jade Everest, Lebagou Rock Paintings, and Tongtian River Scenery, etc.
First, we are going to experience the amorous view at the Source of the Yellow River to enjoy the magnificent snow-covered grassland and visit the Bull Head Stele standing on the Cuorigaze Mountain between Zhaling Lake and Eling Lake.

                           

Then, we will come to Kunlun Mountain Jade Everest, located 10 kilometers east of Kunlun Pass, 160 kilometers south of Golmud, which is the highest peak in the eastern section of Kunlun Mountain.

                           

Lebagou Valley is a historical and cultural monument Wencheng Princess Temple; Entering this Tibetan culture valley, you will see the Mani stones engraved with six-character Scripture and rock paintings with the Tang Dynasty Buddhist plastic art style.
Finally, we will arrive at the Tongtian River, it traverses nearly a thousand kilometers and nurtures Yushu Grassland. Continue to visit; you will see a huge rock and a few ancient expresses on the south bank of the Tongtian River Bridge.

The Birthplace of the Yellow Rivers & Yangtze River in Qumarleb County:

The Yellow River is called "Maqu" in Tibetan, meaning the Peacock River; it is originated in the southwest of the Yoguzonglie Basin at the northern foot of the Kariqu Bayan Har Mountains, with a drainage area of 3194 square kilometers, and the total length is 112.7 kilometers. The mountains at the source of the Yellow River and the vast grasslands are one of the main sources of water conservation for the source of the Three Rivers, which play a decisive role in the ecological status of China and the world.
The north source of the Yangtze River, Lema River, Chumar River, Sewu River, and Daiqu River are originated in Qumarleb County, which is the main water conservation areas of the two major water systems in the north and south of China.

Climate & Weather of Qumarleb County:
Qumarleb County has a typical plateau alpine climate, with the cold and lack of oxygen, intensive sunshine, and strong ultraviolet rays. The cold season lasts for seven or eight months, and the warm season is only four to five months, and the climate is relatively dry. The annual temperature difference is not large, but the yearly average temperature is -3.3℃, and the average annual precipitation is 380-470 mm. Among them, from June to October is the best time to travel to Qumarleb, and the Kunlun National Culture and Art Festival will be held on 8th August each year.

History of Qumarleb County:

As early as 4000 years ago, there were human activities in Qumarleb County. After the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the county area became a part of Subi. Historically, it belonged to the territory of Tubo in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. At the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, Tubo became prosperous, conquered its tribes. Around the middle of the twelfth century, when the Nangqian tribe appeared in Yushu, the Niancuo tribe appeared in southern Qumalai.

Population and Ethnic Group in Qumarleb County:

Qumarleb County has a population of 32,000. There are Tibetan, Han, Hui, Tu, Manchu, Mongolian, Salar, and other ethnic minorities in the county, of which Tibetans account for 97.6%.
 

How to Get to Qumarleb County?

There are two ways to get to Qumarleb County: Trains and Cars.

1. Go to Qumarleb County by Train:

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway traverses 185 kilometres within the county and has two train stations, namely Budongquan and Wudaoliang.
Budongquan Railway Station is located at the intersection of Qumahe Township, Qumarleb County, with an altitude of 4,611 meters, and it is 1,010 kilometres away from Xining Station. The train station is an unmanned station of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, operated by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Group Company.
Wudaoliang Railway Station is located at the intersection of Zhiduo County, and Qumahe Township, Qumarleb County. It is 4675 meters above sea level, 1100 kilometres away from Xining Station, 872 kilometres away from Lhasa Station, and 270 kilometres away from Golmud City.

2. Drive to Qumarleb County:

Qumarleb County has basically formed a road transportation network centred on the county seat, which connecting National Highway 109 and 214.
Driving from Xining to Qumarleb County takes about 3hrs and 28 mins ( 226.7 km ).
Driving from Golmud to Qumarleb County takes about 8hrs ( 500 km ).
