Hami prefecture
Hami prefecture, leaning against the Tianshan Mountains in the north and facing vast desert in the south, is situated in the eastern part of Xinjiang with a total area of 150000 square kilometers and a population of 430000. Composed of Hami City , Barkol County and Yiwu County , the prefecture is on the main route from inland China to Xinjiang and known as the stronghold on the way to the West Regions. Hami has a long history and abundant mineral resources. The ancient cultures and advantaged superiority in natural resources from the frame of today's development. A lot of enterprises of electric power, metallurgical, chemical, textile and other industries together with cultural and civic establishments, such as library, museum, TV station, palaestra and park, compose numerous colorful urban views. The special local products, such as Hami Melon, big Chinese date of Wupu, hop, etc., are not only taken as great pride by local people, but also famous all over the country.
Site of the Stone Constructions in Lanzhouwanzi
Located in the south of Lanzhouwanzi Village , Huayuan Township , Barkol County , the site is the ruin of a stone-constructed residency of 3200 year ago. It firstly appeared as a giant heap of stones, about 3m high and 30m in diameter. But after excavation, a stone-constructed building was found. The wall of the building was built with large pieces of stone, and the building was divided into two rooms connected by a gateway, cooking atove and column holes were found in the room. The unearthed relics include copper vessels, copper knives, painted pottery jars, pottery jugs and stone mills, etc. It's the first time to find a single stone-constructed residency of this size in Xinjiang. It is listed as a cultural site under the autonomous region protection.
The Ancient City of Dahe
Located on the plain area to the southeast of Dongtouqu Village, Dahe Township, Barkol County, it's the site of a city built by the Chinese troops stationed here to reclaim wasteland during the Jinglong reign of the T`ang Dynasty. The city is 240m long from the south to the north, 357m wide from the east to the west, and composed of two cities, namely a main city and a subsidiary city. With its gate facing west, the city has four watchtowers on four corners, and outside the wall there a re buttresses and fortified platforms. There unearthed a lot of cultural relics inside the city, including pieces of pottery, stone mills, construction materials, tile-ends with lotus designs and a few coins. It's the largest site of the Tang Dynasty well preserved in Hami. Now it is listed as a major cultural site under the protection of the autonomous region.
