The Great Wall on the Cliff : The Suspended Wall is a part of the Great Wall. The wall here was built on the ridge with the gradient of 45 degrees. There are 41 major caves and hundreds of others scattered around. Among them, the cave 25 is the most complete preservation. The precious ivory Buddha which in the Palace Museum in Beijing now had been protected in Yulin Grottoes for more than a thousand years.
Yumen Pass was a strategic fort on the ancient Silk Road. It was so named because the jade of the  Xinjiang region was transported to Central China through this frontier pass. Together with the fort at Yang Pass (Yang Guan) it protected Dunhuang against invasion from the west.In his poem "Go North of the Great Wall", the Tang Dynasty (618– 907) poet Wang Zhihuan wrote the famous line, "Beyond Yumen Pass the breath of spring has never crossed".
