Liupan Mountain- A Green Jewel in the Plateau

Under the roof of a pavilion erected on the Liupan Mountain in memory of the Long March of the Road Army stands a steles inscribed with the full text of Mao’s poem Qingpingle: Liupan Mountain in his own handwriting. The pavilion today is a famed tourist attraction in the mountain.
The Liupan Mountain, otherwise know as Longshan, extends for 200 kilometers across Ningxia,Gansu and Shanxi, with its major peak, Mt. Migang, at an altitude of 2,942 meters. Precipitation in the area is abundant owing to the fact that warm and moist currents form the southeast tend to turn to clouds and rain upon meeting the craggy body of the Liupan Mountain at right angles. Plentiful rainfalls bring life to the mountain and the Loess Plateau, turning it into a green isle on a cobweb of arid gullies and ravines. The mountain is the cradle of the Jinghe, Qingshui and Hulu rivers.
The Liupan Mountain looks graceful in a stupendous way. The forests that cover the mountain heap up thick piles of foliage into the sky, providing a natural habitat for 788 varieties of medium-grade and higher plants, 200 or so species of animals and more than 90 kinds of birds. The mountain is another national forest and wildlife nature reserve under due state protection.
The ocean of clouds is a unique attraction of the Liupan Mountain, where they now disperse, now accumulate in a scudding hurry according to changes in topography and season, conjuring up a myriad of spectacular views. Spectacular is also a proper word for the mountain’s other attraction, the Old Dragon Pool, Lotus Garden, Rogue Gully, Swing Stand, and so on.
For its major strategic significance, the Liupan Mountain has seen action of numerous battles in Chinese history and is thus endowed with quite a few scenes and sights of cultural interest. Apart from the Pavilion in Memory of the Red Army’s Long March, there are also a monument to the convergence of Red Army troops that followed different routes in the Long March, the Liangdian Gully where Chengis Khan kept his summer palace and where he died of illness; the setting for the tale of the Tang politician Wei Zheng beheading the old dragon of the Jinhe River in a dream; and the Old Dragon Pool where the legendary scholar Liu Yi comes to the rescue of the Dragon’s Daughter. Indeed, the Liupan Mountain is trove of natural beauty spots wrought by the invisible hands of nature and of culture creations that are microcosms of man’s wisdom.
